How to get Published as a Photographer
Every photographer wants to see their work in a magazine, but how can you make your publication dreams a reality? It's actually a lot easier than you'd think.
Find a magazine with open calls
A quick Google search of "Magazines accepting editorial submissions" will help you yield the result you're looking for. Local publications and zines may be a good way to get a jump start on being published.
Cull the best 6-10 images, (should be an even number)
Editorial spreads run 2 pages at a time, so your best bet is to find an even number of photographs. Include a mix of details, portrait photos to show the hair and makeup, and full-length shots. Ideally you should have multiple looks.
Compile wardrobe and styling credits
Here's your checklist of who to make sure is credited (named). You can print this out and refer back to it:
Photoshoot Credits Checklist:
Photographer (you) [ ]
Model(s) [ ]
Lighting Tech [ ]
Assistant(s) [ ]
Stylist [ ]
Wardrobe credits (ask the stylist for these, basically the names of the clothing brands) [ ]
Makeup artist [ ]
Hairstylist [ ]
Studio or location if a rental [ ]
Email your work to the magazine or upload to Dropbox / Google drive
Look over the submission guidelines carefully and make sure you adhere to what the magazine wants for file names, submission method, etc. Make sure all the images are in focus and that you have your list of credits. Come up with a catchy title for the editorial.
If accepted, congratulations! Make sure to post on your social media and invite your team as collaborators on the post. Tag the magazine and link back on your website. Always ask for a tearsheet for your portfolio.
If you haven't heard back, it's okay to send one follow up email after a couple of weeks have passed, but don't pester the editors. You may not hear back, and that's ok. Keep applying!
I hope these tips were helpful in getting your first publication credit!
